Linux save packages for restore

Although easy to jump versions and distros in Linux, irritating is remembering all the packages that you have installed.  This can be done though from the command line using the following commands:

dpkg --get-selections > packages.txt

Records your selected packages to packages.txt (store this where it's not going to be deleted by installation.

dpkg --set-selections < packages.txt
dselect update
apt-get dselect-upgrade
